50 Years of Avant-Garde. Kabinett für aktuelle Kunst Bremerhaven

For over fifty years the Kabinett für aktuelle Kunst in Bremerhaven has been an important venue for contemporary art. Despite this, it has been neglected in art historical accounts. With an exhibition in the Department of Prints and Drawings, the Kunsthalle Bremen is not only exploring the impressive exhibition history of the Kabinett, but is also honouring the many-years of work dedicated to the institution by its initiator and curator, Jürgen Wesseler.

In 1967, Wesseler founded the non-commercial exhibtion space together with a group of young art lovers of Bremerhaven to develop an alternative exhibition program. In 1969, they started to present artists who later became world famous. Blinky Palermo and Urs Lüthi were followed by Bernd and Hilla Becher, Gerhard Richter and Carl Andre. This notable series has continued to the present day with names such as Ceal Floyer, Luc Tuymans and Andreas Slominski.
At the Kunsthalle Bremen, a selection of artists’ posters will be shown which were created for exhibitions at the Kabinett and are both of artistic and historic value. The history of the Kabinett will be illustrated through selected photographs, conceptual designs and documents.
