What is Love? From Amor to Tinder

Questions of love affect everyone – throughout our lives. The critical significance of love and affection has been reflected in works of art throughout the ages. This exhibition presents a selection of around 40 works from the collection of the Kunsthalle Bremen covering a wide range of periods and styles, from the joy of earthly love to mythological couples and the idealization of beauty.

In addition, works by international contemporary artists are presented which explore different aspects of online dating. In particular, the international app Tinder has repeatedly been picked up by artists. It is one of the most frequently downloaded and, at the same time, controversial apps of its kind. This is the first show in an art museum that explores the changing notions of love of the internet generation and in the age of dating apps.
The exhibition examines historical and contemporary art on the basis of both timeless and current themes. The works are united by motifs and subject matter related to love, beauty and the symbolism of lovers. Among them are paintings, photographs and sculptures, including by Anselm Feuerbach, Charles van Loo, Aristide Maillol, Pablo Picasso, Markus Theodor Rehbenitz, and Tom Wood.
