Painting in Bremen from 1800 to 1950

in the Kunsthalle Bremen

The research project at the Kunsthalle Bremen, sponsored by the Nicolaus Heinrich Schilling-Stiftung, explored between 2008 and 2011 the academic compilation of works in the collection created by Bremen artists between 1800 and 1950.

With over 110 paintings – including larger groups of works by Arthur Fitger, Walter Bertelsmann, and Gustav Gildemeister – the Kunsthalle Bremen owns a representative collection of paintings by Bremen artists. Some of the artists concerned have rarely been the subject of any research. Dr Alice Gudera and Dr Katharina Erling, who examined the works, made an important contribution toward regional culture research as freelance collaborators at the Kunsthalle Bremen. You can access the results of this project in the form of extensive artist biographies and detailed analyses of the works in the Kunsthalle Bremen’s online catalogue.
